Garden Guild
Palos Park Garden Guild I was organized in 1950 with a membership of 20. We are currently members of the National Council of State Garden Clubs and The Garden Clubs of Illinois. Meetings normally convene at 9:30 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
We have landscaped the flowering triangular raised garden at Southwest Highway and Route 83. Our Blue Star Memorial Marker on the Village Green was unveiled on May 25, 2015. The club maintains a continual paver program at this site whereby residents may purchase a personalized brick to honor a loved one who served in the military. These pavers may be purchased throughout the year by contacting Past President (2014-2015) and current Paver Chairman, Fay Schimanski, at (708) 923-1903. The club initiated and maintains two flowering planters at the steps leading up to the entrance of the Palos Park Metra Station. A Butterfly Garden is currently being established in the backyard of our Palos Park Library with a border of our club flower, Rudbeckia, immediately adjacenty to the plot.
Garden Guild has created and displayed Window Box entries at Navy Pier's Annual Flower and Garden Show since 2012.
The club meets at the Recreation Center on the Friday preceding Arbor Day to package three varieties of shrubs/trees that are presented to attendees at the co-sponsored Arbor Day Program on the following Sunday. The club sponsors a Children's Poster Contest and offers four cash prizes at this celebration. At the conclusion of the program, refreshments are provided by the Guild.
Members dress in costume and assist at the children's annual Halloween Party.
Garden Guild participates in the May and November Village programs by refurbishing our plantings for Memorial Day and co-hostessing with the Palos Park Woman's Club at the annual Veteran's Day Luncheon. Together, the clubs prepare a Sweet Table and assist at the meal to honor our residents who served in the Armed Forces.
Contact Helga Fuller at 708-448-5580 for membership information.
