PALOS PARK CELEBRATED ARBOR DAY ON SUNDAY MAY 1, 2005

On Sunday May 1, 2005 Palos Park celebrated Arbor Day at the Kaptur Administration Center.  Over forty Palos Park residents attended the two hour ceremony.  The American Flag was presented by Cub Scout Pack 3729 who led the “Pledge of Allegiance”.  Former Mayor Rosemary Kaptur opened the Arbor Day ceremony reading the Palos Park Arbor Day Proclamation.

Jon “Running Deer” Jordan presented the Arbor Day program.  He is a student and teacher of traditional Lakota Sioux culture.  Mr. Jordan’s program consisted of various aspects of Native American life and the importance of the buffalo to the Lakota Sioux people.  During the presentation , buffalo skins were spread out for participants to sit on and an historical account of the American Buffalo was given.

Tree and shrub posters were distributed with a variety of informative material on tree care.  The Village of Palos Park and Palos Park Garden Guild I handed out over 200 American Plum and Shag-bark Hickory seedlings.  The seedlings came with an instruction sheet that offered information about the seedling and optimal growing success.

The “Care of Trees Company” kindly donated a Bitternut Hickory to the Village for Arbor Day.  The Hickory was planted by the “Care of Trees” on the Village Green April 29th, which was the nationally recognized Arbor Day.  Please stop by when walking around the Village Green to see this beautiful tree.

The Palos Park Tree Body would like to thank the following people for all their time and effort to make our Arbor Day celebration a success:  Palos Park Garden Guild I, Cub Scout Pack 3729, Care of Trees Company, Illinois Arbor Day Association and all attendees.

Tree Body meetings provide information on tree care and protection.  Call the Village or log on to the Village website palospark.org to find out about upcoming events.
