PALOS PARK TREE FOUNDATION
The trees were selected because they are sturdy native
survivors. We have had the most luck planting unpruned trees of 1.5"
caliper that are grown in root bags. For one year, they need an inch of
water once a week if there is no
rainfall. There are no guarantees against deer damage. If food is scare,
deer will eat almost anything. They don't find ash, catalpa, or ironwood
particularly palatable. Spicebush is not a favorite
either. We picked some shrubs so that residents can make their yards more
interesting by naturalizing some areas for wildlife and leaves. Remember
that oaks love their own leaves for fertilizer.
You will notice that the list includes some understory
trees and shrubs that will grow in shade under trees. If your trees are old
or all the same age and species, you should start a replacement program now.
It is important that we have a variety of trees of different ages and
species in Palos Park. Asian longhorn beetles, gypsy moths, Dutch elm
beetles and various tree diseases can threaten our forest and wipe out a
number of the same kind of trees in one season.
