Allied Waste Disposal for the Village of Palos Park and Recycle Info.

The Village of Palos Park offers a solid waste disposal program through a franchise agreement with Allied Waste Services, Inc. for the single family homes of the Village.   The franchise agreement allows Village residents to enjoy prices as much as 50% less than would be available through private contracts, and the franchise cuts down on the number of trucks driving on the Village's residential streets, thus reducing wear and tear.  The Village franchise is an UNLIMITED collection franchise, meaning residents can throw away on unlimited amount of household waste.  The franchise does not cover large amounts of construction debris and certain other types of waste.

Below is a summary of the Homeowners Guide to Refuse, Recycling and Yard Waste Collection Service, published by Allied.  Any questions you may have not addressed below can be answered by Allied at 385-8252.  Any questions you may have that Allied cannot answer, may be directed the Village Administration Department at 448-2700.

Billing:  Residents are billed for the basic collection service (household waste, yard waste, recycling, white goods, limited construction debris) by the Village of Palos Park on the Village's bi-monthly utility bill.  Any extra services the resident desires (toters, dumpsters, etc..) will be billed directly by Allied.

Collection:  The Village has one day a week collection.   Homes east of LaGrange Road are collected on Thursdays and homes west of LaGrange Road are collected on Friday.

Garbage Holidays:   Allied has 5 holiday days: Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Your garbage pickup will be one day later, if the holiday is on a weekday. If the holiday falls on a weekend (Sat or Sun), there is no interruption in your garbage pick-up.  

Yard waste:  Yard waste is collected the same day as other waste.   Yard waste collection is seasonal and occurs from the first pick-up in April through November 30th and also includes collection of Christmas trees the first 3 pick-ups in January.

Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, weeds, shrubbery, brush, small branches. Residents may place yard waste in 30-gallon biodegradable kraft paper bags designed for yard waste. Bags must not exceed 50 Lbs. in weight. Plastic bags are not acceptable. Do not use plastic tape, wire or duct tape to close yard waste bags. Residents may also dedicate reusable containers to yard waste. Containers may be no larger than 33 gallons, they must have a removable cover and a "YARD WASTE ONLY" sticker (Available at the Village Hall). There is no limit to the number of containers you may have. Branches which do not fit into bags or containers must be bundled with biodegradable twine. Bundles must not exceed 5 feet in length, 2 foot in diameter or 50 pounds.

Toters: Residents may request the 95 gallon cart with large wheels by calling 708/385-8252.  The additional charge for the cart is $2.50, which is billed directly to the resident by Allied.

Household Hazardous Waste:  Allied will not take hazardous materials such as tires, paint, and used motor oil.  Often the suppliers of these items can provide a means of disposal.  Also, the IEPA periodically holds hazardous waste disposal days to take these types of items.  See Special Events section for more information on IEPA hazardous waste days.

Containers:  Bags cannot exceed 33 gallons and re-usable containers cannot exceed 50 pounds in weight.

Items not collected:  Automotive batteries and their equivalents, explosives and volatile waste, flammables, gasoline, oil, toxic and hazardous materials, acids and poisons, unhardened paint, and paint thinners and varnishes.

Household furnishings: Allied will remove furniture such as sofas, chairs, tables, beds, and dressers on regular collection days for no additional charge.

Construction /Remodeling Debris:  Allied will take up to 2 cubic yards per week of construction/remodeling debris per week.  Any single item placed out for collection cannot exceed 50 pounds in weight.  There will be an additional charge of $12.50 for any amount of debris past 2 cubic yards.

White Goods (Appliances):  There is no additional charge for these items.  Allied would ask that residents remove all doors prior to placement at the curb for safety reasons.

Blue Recycling bins are FREE and must be used for recycling and are to be places at the curb for pick-up. Allied uses a two-sort system on your recyclable: paper and commingle (glass, cans, bottles, etc) items. Should you move, leave the recycle bin for the next homeowner. If you have any questions call (708)385-8252. If you would like to use larger recycle bins, Allied will supply you with "Recycle" stickers to place on your containers.

Paper & Can Recycle

Sort #1-Paper Items
Acceptable: Newspaper and paper inserts from newspaper.
Preparation: Place in brown paper bag and place on top or next to bin.
Unacceptable: Plastic bags, gift wrap and non-paper items that come with newspaper.

Mixed paper & Cardboard
Acceptable: Paperboard, regular (cereal boxes, paper tubes) and wet-strength (soda/beer cartons); frozen food paper packages, telephone books, magazines, catalogs and bulk mail, paper grocery bags, corrugated cardboard, stationary, copy paper, envelops, note paper, and computer paper.
Preparation: Place all mixed paper and paperboard into brown paper bags. Cardboard must be flattened.
Unacceptable: Paper with waxed surfaces or plastic liners & gift wrap. All paper and cardboard must be free of food debris and grease. Newspaper, mixed paper and Cardboard may be mixed Together in a Paper Bag.

All items listed below should be placed loose in your bin.
Preparation: All materials should be rinsed and free of food debris. Lids should be removed. Metal lids may be recycled. Plastic lids should be discarded.

Glass Bottles and Jars

Acceptable: Clear, green and brown bottles and jars.
Unacceptable: Window glass, ceramics, ovenware, crystal, mirrors and Pyrex

Food and Drink Cans

Acceptable: All beverage cans and food cans (aluminum, steel and bi-metal)
Unacceptable: Chemical paint thinner solvent or non-aerosol pesticide cans.

Juice Boxes and Milk Cartons

Acceptable: Paperboard milk and juice cartons and drink boxes.

Empty Aerosol Cans

Acceptable: Metal Aerosol cans.
Unacceptable: Unemptied cans. (hazardous)

Aluminum Foil

Acceptable: Clean disposable pie pans, aluminum foil and pastry foil
Unacceptable: Aluminum Siding, lawn chairs

Plastics

Acceptable: Coded plastic, bottles and containers. Six pack and twelve pack rings.
Unacceptable: Any uncoded plastics. Oil containers, plastic buckets, plastic grocery bags. Food contaminated plastics and over-sized plastics and such as 5 and 10 gallon paint containers. Plastic toys. All materials should be rinsed and free of food debris. Lids should be removed. Metal lids may be recycled. Plastic lids should be discarded.

"White Goods" include, but are not limited to, stoves, ovens, washing machines, dryers, air conditioners, freezers, refrigerators, dehumidifiers, water softeners, water heaters, microwave ovens, trash compactors and dishwashers. For safety reasons please remove all doors prior to placing at the curb. There is no additional charge for the collection of these items.
