In Feb. 2006 Palos Park police trained at the
RCMP Mounted Training facility for for 2 weeks. Their class consisted of
departments as vast Minneapolis, Pasadena, California, Boston, New Jersey
State Police. The RCMP units train on horseback 6 days per week 9 hours a
day. The units are used for crowd control, parades, search and rescue and
more. The horses are supplied by RCMP
members of the "The Ride". "The Ride" is the RCMP's full time officer (7
year commitment) from throughout Canada who volunteer for the group. From
April until November they appear all over Canada as goodwill ambassadors.
The headquarters is based in Regina, Canada. They are known in Canada
as The Red Surge (The red coat) and Black thunder (all their horses are pure
black). For 2 weeks each year they offer outside training courses to other
mounted units. Officers Fred
Villanova
and Ron
Philpot represented the Palos Park
Police Department.
