Public Works Department-Tree Branch Pick-up
Tree Branch pick up will run
April through
November.
On
Monday the Chipper Crew begins at the east end of the village and
continues west until all streets have been serviced. If branches are
put out after the Chipper Crew has serviced a street the branches will
not be removed until the following week. In order to make sure your
branches are picked up in a timely manner please set out branches by
7:00 a.m. Monday.
Preparing branches for pickup:
Branches
can be 6” in diameter or smaller. There is no need to cut the branches
into lengths, please leave them as long as cut from the tree or as large
as you can safely handle. Make sure branches are free of wire or other
metal objects.
The cut
ends of the branches should all be facing the street; all branches
therefore should be facing the same direction. Tie small branches
together with string or twine.
Anything
too small to bundle and any yard rakings should be put out as yard waste
on regular garbage day.
The
Chipper is not able to take roots, root balls construction lumber,
fencing, or railroad ties – please do not mix in with branches.
The
disposal of large logs (bigger than 6” diameter) and other material
unsuitable for chipping is the owner’s responsibility.
Wood
chips are available for residents by the truck load during chipping
season. Call the Public Works Garage at 923-7170 and leave your name,
address, and phone number.
FIREWOOD AVAILABLE – When the Village has to cut down a tree from the
right-of-way any suitable wood is cut into fire place lengths and left
at the side of the road. Residents may take the wood on a first come
first serve basis. The Village will remove any wood if not picked up
within a reasonable time.
Compost Your Organic Matter for Rich Soil
Try This Recipe Find a shady spot. Use grass clippings (above and beyond
those you leave on your lawn to help it stay robust and green), spent but
healthy garden plants, kitchen scraps (including egg shells and coffee
grounds, but not meat, bones, oils, or dairy products), leaves, straw, hay,
and sawdust from untreated wood. Avoid coals, charcoal, dog feces, cat
litter, and pesticides. Mix them in a 6" layer, add a shovel full of soil or
old compost, and sprinkle with water to moisten the mixture to the wetness
of a squeezed-out sponge. Repeat the layers, aerating and watering as
needed. Call the City of Chicago Department of Environment, 312-744-7606,
for further tips.
